Mount Redoubt volcano in southern Alaska came to life on Sunday night and has erupted five times through Monday morning, local newspaper reported.
The snow-covered Redoubt began erupting on Sunday at 10:38 p.m. local time, followed by four more eruptions overnight, with the latest explosion coming at 4:31 a.m. Monday, the Anchorage Daily News reported on its website.
The eruptions have blast ash to as high as 60,000 feet (about 18 kilometers) above sea level and minor ash fall has been reported in some area.
The situation prompted some airlines to cancel or divert flights. Alaska Airlines on Monday canceled 19 flights in and out of Anchorage International Airport because of the ash.
The National Weather Service also advised people in areas of ash fall to seal windows and doors, protect electronics and cover air intakes and open water supplies as well as minimize driving.
Based on the history of Redoubt eruptions, the latest event might continue for months, John Powers, a geophysicist at Alaska Volcano Observatory, told reporters.
