New Episode from Chief Reason on The Adventures of Jake & Vinnie

The Buckeye Stops Here - Episode #28

Published by chiefreason under The Adventures of Jake and Vinnie

Battalion Chief Jacque (Jack) Lessard got to Grandview in 1991. He took the roundabout from-you guessed it-Ohio.

Growing up just outside of Toledo in Rossford, Jack, his brother, mom and dad would drive into Toledo after church and stop at a fire station. Other times, they would stop at a vollie firehouse and peer through the windows at the fire trucks. This is when Jack started hearing his calling. See the rest here: Chief Reason

It’s Back

Winter's return

Up to a foot of snow possible in Brainerd area in coming days

Spring may have to wait a little longer.
Sunday's bright sun and 40-degree temperatures also brought news that a winter storm warning had been issued from 6 p.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison and Todd counties.
The storm, moving east out of the Rocky Mountains, could bring as much as 8 to 12 inches of snow to Brainerd, said Tom Lonka, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth Full Story Here

I really did want to use up the gas in the snow blower. I hope that this additional snow brings the lake levels back up where they should be. The Mississippi river here is at flood stage but low enough to not be a threat here. Down river at Fort Ripley it is out of its banks, so this should keep it there for a while.

Dog rescued from tree

A Knoxville Tennessee family’s young hound dog may turn out to be quite the bird dog.

“Buford”, a 5-month-old hound mix, had to be rescued by utility crews after somehow climbing to the top of a 20-foot tree in his family’s yard.

No one saw Buford make his way up the tree, but by the time his rescuers returned him to the ground a small crowd had gathered.

Tyler Wilson, Buford’s owner, says he’s never seen anything like it.

Obama: Mexico cartels 'completely out of hand'

If you follow my blog you know I have been watching this situation. It's good to see that this has not gone un-noticed by the media, and that it was brought up during his (Obama’s) news conference last night. Hopefully this gets better before it gets worse. This could end up as an all out war that going to spill across the border?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama on Tuesday vowed to invest the resources needed to address the threat posed by drug traffickers in Mexico.

A police convoy moves in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, last month, across the U.S. border from El Paso, Texas.

"We are going to continue to monitor the situation, and if the steps we have taken do not get the job done, then we will do more," he told reporters Tuesday night.

He praised the efforts of Mexican President Felipe Calderon to counter drug cartels, which "have gotten completely out of hand," but said the United States must take further steps, such as ensuring that illegal guns and cash do not flow from north of the Rio Grande to the cartels in Mexico.

"That's what makes them so dangerous," he said.

Obama's remarks came hours after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that the United States is sending hundreds of federal agents and crime-fighting equipment to the border.

Mount Redoubt Erupts

Mount Redoubt volcano in southern Alaska came to life on Sunday night and has erupted five times through Monday morning, local newspaper reported.

The snow-covered Redoubt began erupting on Sunday at 10:38 p.m. local time, followed by four more eruptions overnight, with the latest explosion coming at 4:31 a.m. Monday, the Anchorage Daily News reported on its website.

The eruptions have blast ash to as high as 60,000 feet (about 18 kilometers) above sea level and minor ash fall has been reported in some area.

The situation prompted some airlines to cancel or divert flights. Alaska Airlines on Monday canceled 19 flights in and out of Anchorage International Airport because of the ash.

The National Weather Service also advised people in areas of ash fall to seal windows and doors, protect electronics and cover air intakes and open water supplies as well as minimize driving.

Based on the history of Redoubt eruptions, the latest event might continue for months, John Powers, a geophysicist at Alaska Volcano Observatory, told reporters.

The 10,197-foot (3,108-meter) Mount Redoubt is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. VIRGINIA FIREFIGHTER CHARGED BY COPS IN ROLLOVER CRASH DURING TRAINING: Amongst The Charges: FAILURE TO WEAR A SEAT BELT

Sunday, March 22, 2009

6 Virginia Firefighters were injured in a crash involving their fire truck this morning around 0800 hours.  They are all members of the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Department and were reported to be out doing training.
The apparatus encountered a slight curve in the road, the rig dipped off the pavement and hit a tree, went down an embankment and rolled several times. One of the firefighters was flown by air from the scene, the other firefighters were also injured but the extent of the injuries isn’t known yet. The apparatus driver, FF Daniel Johnson, 29 was charged by Virginia State Police with failure to maintain control, reckless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. Speed was reported to not be a factor.

How many times a day do we, the fire service, fail to wear seat belts? How can we call ourselves a profession (volunteer or career) and a brotherhood and continue to let this happen? How can we tell a family that their firefighter is not coming home because the fire department seat belt policy was not followed or enforced? How many more funerals must we have?

Firefighters Battling Blaze at Illinois Casino

JOLIET, Ill. --

A kitchen fire at the Empress Casino in northern Illinois has forced the evacuation of everyone inside.

Police Lt. Stephen Breen says there are no reports of any injuries. He says the fire started in a kitchen area that was under renovation and hasn't spread to the rest of the casino in Joliet.

He says all casino guests and workers were evacuated as a precaution and the nearby parking garage was cleared.

Breen says welders apparently started the Friday morning blaze. He says a spark might have hit some grease around the ceiling area, but that it's too soon to say exactly what happened.

The story from the AP:
A convenience store gasoline pump caught fire and exploded Tuesday, killing a woman and injuring at least one other person, police said. Witnesses told The Gazette newspaper the pump caught fire after hit was hit by a pickup that had in turn been struck by an SUV. Police said the incident was under investigation.
The woman was pumping gas when the fire erupted, and she was trapped between the pump and a minivan, witnesses said.
"She was standing there screaming 'Help me! Help me! I'm going to die,'" The Gazette was told.
The SUV driver, was treated at Memorial Hospital for bruises. She was cited for suspicion of careless driving involving a death, a misdemeanor, Whitlock said.
A passenger in the minivan was unharmed as was the driver of the pickup. A man who works across the street from the 7-Eleven store where the explosion occurred, said he tried to get to the woman but the heat was too intense.
Other eyewitness who also works across the street, said he ran to the store with a fire extinguisher but an off-duty firefighter yelled at him to back off. Just then the pump exploded.
"She was frozen in there, between the gas pumps and her car," "She was holding her face. Flames were all around her. She never got out."
Colorado Springs is about 60 miles south of Denver.

Lightweight, lightweight? This from Fire Gezzer

Hope you have heard of and are aware of lightweight construction, here they are going even lighter. The fire service needs to push the issue of lightweight construction material safety. When used this material should be protected by covering with drywall and or the manufacturing process needs to be examined to include making this stuff fire resistive. (Without making more toxic products of combustion) On their web site these manufactures have done fire exposure test. Stay Safe

They’re Not Burning Fast Enough !

THERE HAVE BEEN TOO MANY FIREFIGHTER DEATHS AND INJURIES in the past few years due to the rapid interior collapse of newer homes built with “lightweight construction” methods.  This problem may be lessened soon with the introduction of Georgia-Pacific’s new wood-chips-and-glue XJ 85 I-Joist.

xj85-c

This remarkable product has several large holes already cut through the woody-type floor joists that are designed to make for faster and easier installation of heating ducts, electric conduits, etc.

xj85-b

With this innovation being brought into the housing construction trade, newer houses that have fires will now be falling in before the first-due engine even gets there.

It’s what the Yuppies call a Win-Win.  The FD wins because we’re not there yet when the roof meets the basement and the home builders win because rebuilding costs are increased.  As for the poor sap whose house burns down ….. well, that’s what insurance is for, isn’t it?

Presumably, the cost savings from using this method would be enough to pay for installing a home sprinkler system.  But don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.  Especially in Minnesota.

You can learn more about this wonderful new product HERE.

Thanks to Firegeezer reader Troy N. who brought this to our attention.

XJ 85 Wood I Beam joistsFind your ductwork's happy place. Run it in conditioned space.
The XJ 85® I-joist from Georgia-Pacific is an innovative engineering achievement, combining radical hole shaping and placement with the stiffness and quality you expect from Georgia-Pacific Wood Products. The strategically located pre-cut openings allow ductwork to be run in conditioned spaces, out of extreme attic temperatures. This helps lower heating and cooling loads, and helps increase energy efficiency. Plus, the lightweight construction and wider on-center spacing of the XJ 85 joists contribute to lower installed cost.

5 human heads discovered in ice chests in central Mexico

I have been following this activity on the internet. Here is yet another incident worth reading about. Story from CNN Here

.

(CNN) -- Five human heads were found in ice chests on Tuesday under a ficus tree in the central Mexican state of Jalisco, police said.

Police in Jalisco, Mexico, discovered five heads beside a road to Guadalajara on Tuesday morning.

Police in Jalisco, Mexico, discovered five heads beside a road to Guadalajara on Tuesday morning.

The grisly find appeared to be the latest indication of drug cartels fighting for supremacy in battles that have left thousands dead.

Police in the municipality of Ixtlahuacan del Rio were informed of the discovery at 2 a.m., the prosecutor's office said in a written statement.

Each head was found in a separate ice chest beside a road leading to the city of Guadalajara, police said.

The tops of the ice chests were inscribed with messages, among them, one that threatened further violence.

"Like these, I am going to finish everyone," says one. "I'm going after you, 'Goyo.'"

Another said, "Here we go, 'Goyo,' idiot."

The victims' eyes were taped shut and the heads had been severed only a few hours before they were discovered, the statement said.

The victims -- all of them men -- were estimated at 30 to 45 years of age.

No bullet wounds were visible and there was no indication the men had been tortured, although experts would need to study the bodies to be sure, it added.

Municipal police said one of the heads appeared to belong to someone known in the community.

Jalisco is near the state of Sinaloa, where the Sinaloa cartel is based.

Live Burns

Check out this story if you have ever considered cutting a corner to set up a live burn. Take the time to read the comments too. http://www.observer-reporter.com/OR/Story/03-06-McDonald-Fire This is why we do not burn acquired structures without a clean report on asbestos.

McDonald fire sparks charges By Michael Jones, Staff writer
mjones@observer-reporter.com
The state attorney general's office charged two McDonald firefighters and another man with conspiring to burn down a house for fire training purposes despite knowing it contained asbestos.
The charges were filed against the three men Feb. 20 following a yearlong investigation into why a controlled burn was allowed at 118 W. Lincoln Ave. in McDonald.
State investigators arrested Thomas Krenn, a 30-year veteran and assistant chief of McDonald Volunteer Fire Department, Mark Slack, a 20-year member and first assistant chief, and Dale Csonka, a local businessman. Richard Bosco, a special agent for the state attorney general's office, filed the charges through District Judge Valarie Costanzo's office, and all three men were released on $20,000 unsecured bond.
Brant T. Miller, a lawyer who represents the fire department, said Krenn and Slack were placed on administrative leave following the charges.
"The alleged criminal activity did not occur while serving in their roles as volunteer firemen," Miller said. "Tom Krenn and Mark Slack are both highly experienced and qualified and have shown exemplary and dedicated community service to both the Borough of McDonald and the fire department."
According to the criminal affidavit, Csonka owned the house on West Lincoln Avenue and approached McDonald fire Chief Doug Cooper about using it for training purposes. Cooper forwarded the request to Krenn and Slack, who is also an assistant general manager for Specialized Professional Services Inc. of Washington, and tasked them with testing the structure to find if it contained hazardous materials.
Slack asked Adam Lohr, a colleague at SPSI, to take samples at the house so it could be approved by the state Department of Environmental Protection. The results showed the building had a material that contained asbestos.
After receiving the results in December 2007, Krenn, Slack and Csonka met and discussed retesting the home and agreed not to use samples from the exterior or siding, according to the criminal affidavit. Krenn and Slack allegedly instructed Lohr not to use the building's exterior or siding when he took a second sample in January 2008.
The affidavit claims Krenn submitted a DEP burn permit application that made no mention of asbestos. The following month, the DEP and state fire academy granted permission to proceed with the March 29 controlled burn of the house.
Cooper, several McDonald firefighters, Peters Township firefighter Noel McMullen and numerous residents witnessed the burning without knowing about the asbestos. Bosco wrote in the affidavit that "the fire produced clouds of smoke and ash debris that covered the surrounding area."
Two days later, the DEP's emergency response team came to the house following reports of toxic smoke and collected samples from the rubble. The DEP tested the material and returned positive results for asbestos.
The attorney general's office reviewed the DEP permit application and found inconsistencies. The DEP later told investigators it would not have granted the permit had it known about the problems with the application, the affidavit said.
Krenn, of 139 Arabella St., McDonald, was charged with arson, causing or risking a catastrophe, tampering with public records, unlawful conduct and two counts each of conspiracy and unsworn falsification to authorities.
Slack, of 1212 Reissing Road, Cecil Township, and Csonka, of 1009 Spring St., Robinson Township, both face charges of arson, causing or risking catastrophe, unlawful conduct and two counts of criminal conspiracy.
Krenn, Slack and Csonka could not be reached for comment Thursday.
The preliminary hearing for the three men is scheduled with Costanzo for 1:30 p.m. March 19.

MSA SCBA Safety Warning!

Monday, March 9, 2009

MSA has issued two user advisories.

http://media.msanet.com/www/PDFs/MSANorthAmerica/SafetyNotices/08014-24(user%20letter).pdf
If you use an MSA backpack with the URC (RIT) connectors please review these notices and make the appropriate inspections. Our friends out there advise us that in a major metropolitan department a check of their entire stock of MSA backpacks (about 200 or so) resulted in a 15-20% failure rate. Failure of either of these tests could result in complete discharge of the cylinder in seconds and the inability to receive help from your fellow firefighters.

Peterson's stepbrother finally tells his story - A summary of what Morphey told police about weekend of Stacy's disappearance

IS this ever going to come to an end? Can’t wait for the book and movie, come on you know it’s coming. I am surprised that some private investigator is not looking into this story. Seems that the cops can’t get to the root of it. Interesting story here in the Beacon news.

Tom Morphey, Drew Peterson's stepbrother, has come clean about what happened in the time around the disappearance of Drew's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Believing Stacy Peterson was in the blue barrel he helped his stepbrother haul to a waiting get-away car, Thomas Morphey said he tried to kill himself by swallowing bottles of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pills.

Morphey survived the attempt but does not know if this makes him lucky.

    Electrifying Rescue In Georgia

THE GWINNETT COUNTY, GEORGIA, FIREFIGHTERS had a high-angle rescue on their hands early Saturday morning. A drunken 21-yr.-old had one of those “Hey guys, watch this!” moments and tried to climb a high-tension power line tower.

Part way up, he encounted the electro-magnetic field that the wires give off and experienced that shocking sensation one gets in those areas. He lost his grip and got his pants-leg entangled in the structure, leaving him dangling upside down 35 ft. off the ground.

Gwinnett County’s Technical Rescue Team had trouble reaching the tower due to the remote terrain and they had to wait for the power company to de-energize the lines before they could rig up the rescue harness.

The unidentified, and now sober, man was taken to the hospital where he was treated for burns he received when he triggered the electrical flash that jolted his grip.

Volunteer Firefighter Samantha Lamp lost control of her fire truck just south of Harrisburg on Highway J ; on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities do not know the extent of her injuries, but they did say Lamp complained of head and neck pain. Lamp was wearing her seatbelt when her truck rolled over one and a half times while she was on her way to fight a natural cover fire. A firefighter from another truck responding to the same call helped pull Lamp from the wreckage as it was on fire. Lamp was the only person in the truck that crashed.

    Man narrowly avoids being crushed

In case you missed this video on the news I have posted it for you. This guy is one lucky guy as he narrowly avoids being crushed in a collision between a train and a truck.

He cheated death twice in a matter of minutes.
Cem Tokac of Turkey was caught in the middle when a train collided with a flatbed truck - but miraculously survived with only scratches, London's Daily Mail newspaper reported.
A YouTube video shows the truck being hit while crossing train tracks in the port city of Mersin. The collision swept both vehicles over Tokac, who was standing next to the tracks at the time.
Tokac's white hard hat goes flying as he is flattened to the ground, but he survived with bruises and a scratch to his ear. The lucky 32-year-old fell between the wheels of the truck, while the train missed him by inches.
"I can't remember anything about the accident," Tokac told the Daily Mail. "I thought I was asleep. But when I woke up, I was not in my bed. I was on the ground.
"Life is really beautiful," he said.

Kennedy to be knighted by queen http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/world/2009/0305/1224242303751.html
SENATOR EDWARD Kennedy has accepted an honorary knighthood from Britain’s Queen Elisabeth in recognition of his contribution to peace in the North and to the relationship between Britain and the United States.
Announcing the award during an address to the joint houses of Congress yesterday, British prime minister Gordon Brown praised the Democrat’s political achievements at home and abroad.
“I know that you will allow me to single out for special mention today one of your most distinguished senators, known in every continent and a great friend,” Mr Brown said. “Northern Ireland today is at peace, more Americans have healthcare, children around the world are going to school, and for all those things we owe a great debt to the life and courage of senator Edward Kennedy.” The announcement was greeted with cheers and a standing ovation.
Mr Kennedy (76), who is suffering from a malignant brain tumour, is the latest in a succession of prominent Irish-Americans to accept British honours.
Last year businessman Dan Rooney, a co-founder of the Ireland Funds who is widely expected to be named the next US ambassador to Ireland, became an honorary commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while New York hotelier John Fitzpatrick was named an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Other Irish-American recipients include New York lawyer John Connorton, who was awarded a CBE in 2004 for his work towards peace in the North.

    New way to commit suicide

This from FireGezzer and had to pass this along, good heads up!
Note: This item is also how to make a self igniting Molotov cocktail.

New Suicide Stunt Endangers FF’s & Medics
AN EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COORDINATOR in an urban county in Texas was recently contacted by a relative who is an EMT and assistant coroner in Pennsylvania. He told him of an unusual call that he was dispatched to for a “person down in auto.” On arrival they found the victim sitting in his car, obviously unconscious. Before they were done, the incident grew into a full-blown haz mat call and the health of several first responders might have been compromised if they hadn’t already had safety goggles and gloves on.
Research done after that “close call” found that recently a new way to commit suicide has been discovered by mixing two chemicals that can be bought over the counter at local stores. They are Bonide - a sulfur spray used as an insecticide for fruit trees and hydrochloric (muriatic) acid. Once mixed, the chemicals produce heat and a flammable, noxious gas that causes the subject to pass out and the heart stop within minutes. The process appears to be quick and painless.
Two other similar events in California and Georgia indicate that this knowledge is spreading through the underground and could well be practiced in any community in North America. Both instances involved young men in their 20’s and locked inside their car with the chemicals. Both had left a note on the dashboard warning of the lethal gas to be found inside.
In August the Pasadena Independent reported:
A newer model, white VW Beetle was sealed off from public Monday as it was believed to contain hazardous chemicals as well as a body of a young man in his 20’s.
Pasadena police and fire officials staged at Halstead (just behind the Best Buy shopping Center) 2:40 p.m. HazMat teams from Glendale were quickly called in.
The windows to the car were rolled up and apparently locked. The temperature was about 100 degrees when officials arrived. There was allegedly a sign on the vehicle warning people of the potential danger.

Engine 37 from Pasadena established a staging area down wind for incoming units and contacted PPD to gather more information. Battalion 3 arrived on scene and established Halstead command. Upon further investigation and information gathered from PPD, it was determined that the LACO specialized haz-mat unit would be needed.
You can read the entire article HERE.

And more recently, in December the Cartersville, Georgia, Daily Tribune reported:
Bartow County HAZMAT workers, in addition to other city and county emergency crews, were called Tuesday to a day use area on Lake Allatoona where a man had apparently committed suicide using hazardous chemicals.
Around 12 p.m. Bartow County fire fighters, deputies and emergency medical workers responded to a call that a man was found by a park ranger sitting in a car and did not appear to be breathing. In that car were two buckets containing a yellow substance and a note on the window that said, ‘Caution,’ and it had the chemical name on it,” BCFD Bt. Chief David Levey said, adding that the substance was a mixture of chemicals including sulfuric acid.
Read the full account of the incident HERE.

Our EPO friend has compiled a simple check-list to remind you of some good practices whenever you run a call that looks like it could be one of these:
Do not become complacent! Your response should be similar on every call.
    Don’t go rushing in.
    Survey the scene.
    Does the scene look routine?
Do you see anything unusual? (Example: A note on the window, containers inside the vehicle and taped windows or vents).
    Wear the appropriate PPE.
Establish a Hot Zone and call for additional resources (haz mat, PD, etc.)
Did PD arrive prior to FD and become contaminated requiring emergency decon and first aid?
What action will you take? Will you hurry to make patient access? Will you use a lockout tool, center punch, or halligan to make entry?
You make access, a rush of warm air comes out of the vehicle and you smell a sharp odor. You have just become a victim and have been exposed to a noxious, possibly fatal gas.
Use this information to structure a drill for the entire shift. It’s only a matter of time until somebody uses this trick to make a booby trap for first-responders.

    Bill banning headwear

Muslims dislike bill banning headwear in DL photos Muslims dislike bill banning headwear in DL photos AP

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A St. Cloud lawmaker says a bill that would ban any kind of headwear in a driver's license photo is a matter of public safety. But some Muslims say they have a religious right to cover their heads.
State Rep. Steve Gottwalt says banning headwear would make it easier for law enforcement to identify people and it would make it fair for everyone.
But Suban Khalif says Muslim women wear a head scarf nearly 24 hours a day as part of their religion, and taking it off — even for a few minutes — is a big deal. Khalif and other Muslim women say their facial features should be enough for law enforcement to identify them.
Gottwalt's bill has exceptions. If a person has a deformity or a medial condition that requires headwear, then they can wear it for their driver's license picture. Gottwalt says he's hoping to get a committee hearing for the bill soon.

Flaming ping pong balls light Jennings fire

Don't get any ideas and defenately DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

Flaming ping pong balls light Jennings fire
    http://www.claytodayonline.com/content/831_1.php#rating
    By Greg Walsh,
    Managing Editor
MIDDLEBURG FL– Deep in the woods of Jennings State Forest, two state Division of Forestry firefighters stand at the intersection of rutted roads barely wide enough for their vehicles.
Burned trees stand behind them and smoke is billowing hundreds of feet overhead from a fast-moving fire less then a half-mile ahead of them.
On another day this might be reason for great concern, but this day it was a situation of the Division of Forestry’s own making.
After years of planning, state forestry officials began a controlled burn Thursday, Feb. 26, of 900 acres in the 26,000-acre forest in northwest Clay County to clear out hardwood and pine litter and reduce the impact of any future wildfire.

What was unusual about this burn, however, was how it was ignited – by helicopter.
Thanks to nearly ideal wind and humidity conditions, the DOF was able to use an aerial ignition device manned by a DOF firefighter sitting partially outside a Huey UH-60 helicopter flying hundreds of feet over the forest floor.

The device continuously drops small plastic orbs, similar in size to a ping pong ball, that contain potassium permanganate. The machine injects them with ethalene glycol, creating a chemical reaction that begins as the balls fall to the ground. They burst into flames in about 30 seconds.
Ashley Spillers, a Clay County-based DOF firefighter, was serving as spotter on the helicopter.
"We definitely need it," Spillers said during a refueling stop. "Normally we (do the burns) by hand starting them. The most we can do in a day is about 300 acres and that’s if everybody is there and nobody calls in sick.

"(By helicopter) in three hours we can 1,000 acres," he said. "It makes a big difference."
Foresters prefer conditions with moderate humidity levels and winds 10-15 miles per hour to push the fire sideways. The alternative is for flames to go straight up and begin damaging the tops of trees.

On Thursday, the easterly winds meant firefighters started in the western-most quadrant and let the flames back toward the interior. Several firefighting units were on standby in the forest and quickly responded if the fire began to leave the planned burn area.
Using topographical maps, Spillers directed pilot Keith Fender to the ignition points and kept contact with the "burn director" Heather Venter, a state forest biologist monitoring on the ground, via radio.
Greg Barton, an Ocala-based DOF firefighter, operated the ball-dropping device. Sitting partially out the helicopter’s side door with his feet on the runner, he watched as the balls fell from a shoot and floated slowly to the ground.
Annaleasa Winter, public information officer for the DOF Jacksonville division, said the controlled burns are vital as Florida prepares to enter the months of the year when wildfire danger is at its highest.

"They plan all these burns out years in advance," Winter said. "We had been planning this one for years and even this year it’s been delayed because the conditions weren’t right until today."
The burns in state forests are particularly important to private residents whose property adjacent to Jennings, which is popular with horseback riding, hiking and canoeing on Black Creek.
"(The landowners) have to love the idea that nobody will never move in behind them and develop," she said. "They just have to put up with a little smoke from time to time."

How Many Zeros in a Billion

The next time you hear a politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it’s releases.
    A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
    B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
    C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
    D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
    E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain… let’s take a look at New Orleans …. It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans .. Interesting number… what does it mean?
    A. Well… if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528.
    B. Or… if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
    C. Or… if you are a family of four… your family gets $2,066,012.

Imagine, now $700 billion bailing out banks in the US . That’s enough to fund complete medical care for every man, woman and child currently alive in the US for 11 years!!
50 billion to bail out the auto industry???

HELLO!!! Are all your calculators broken??
Accounts Receivable Tax, Building Permit Tax, CDL License Tax, Cigarette Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Dog License Tax, Federal Income Tax, Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA), Fishing License Tax, Food License Tax, Fuel Permit Tax, Gasoline Tax, Hunting License Tax, Inheritance Tax, Inventory Tax, IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax), IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Luxury Tax, Marriage License Tax, Medicare Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Service charge taxes, Social Security Tax, Road Usage Tax (Truckers), Sales Taxes, Recreational Vehicle Tax, School Tax, State Income Tax, State Unemployment Tax (SUTA), Telephone Federal Excise Tax, Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax upon Tax, Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax, Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax, Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax, Telephone State and Local Tax, Telephone Usage Charge Tax, Utility Tax, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax, Watercraft Registration Tax, Well Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax, Income Tax, Everything Tax
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago… and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt… We had the largest middle class in the world.. and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened? Can you spell ‘politicians!’

Golden Rule - What is said here, when you leave here, stays here. Support the management let the city council, board or trustees criticise them.
Thy Mouth Is Open- You weren't hired to give speeches. This isn't the United Nations. Feel free to ask real questions or to speak up about safety concerns. This doesn't grant you license to give out philosphically on the "way this department runs." NOTHING is worse than a mouthy new person.

    From Firefighter Close Calls

    Monday, March 2, 2009-
Thanks to our friends at FireNews.net for this update about Stony Hill (NC)Pumper 264 was involved in that single-vehicle accident while responding to a call on Saturday afternoon. They were dispatched at 13:31 hours with Wake Forest and Falls fire departments to a reported house fire in Wake Forest at 2120 Purnell Road. No fire was found at the house. While responding, Pumper 264 overturned on its side on Purnell Road, about a half-mile east of Camp Kanata Road. They reported they were overturned about 13:38.Additional fire and EMS units were immediately dispatched to their accident, including Stony Hill Pumper 262, Falls Pumper 212, EMS 12, EMS 33, and EMS District 6.Command was assumed by SHFD 101. The three personnel on the pumper were transported to WakeMed with minor injuries. All were wearing seat belts. They were treated and released Saturday evening.Other units that responded included Stony Hill 100, 101; Wake Forest Car 2, Car 4, Battalion 1, Utility 6, Falls Utility 21, Bay Leaf 100, Wake EMS Chief 100, and WC 1.Falls and Wake Forest assisted Stony Hill on scene and also with coverage. They also helped transfer equipment from Pumper 264 back to the station. The 2005 Pierce Contender was up-righted about 15:20 and removed from the scene after 16:00.Purnell Road was closed between Camp Kanata and Thompson Mill roads during the operation.Archived radio traffic is available at http://wake.nc.scanamerica.us/modules.php?name=FeedArchive.
Editor’s Note: this post from Stony Hill Fire Chief A. C. Rich appeared on the Raleigh/Wake County Firefighting Blog: Everybody, please wear your seatbelts at all times.
These three guys were wearing theirs and injury was minimized.
Here’s what happened before any speculation begins: The truck dropped the right front wheel off of the roadway onto the soft shoulder, speed was not excessive, the truck drifted to the right even more after the wheel drop and inertia took over. A nothing showing size-up was given on scene of the dispatched structure fire and P264 had reduced to non-emergency response prior to the accident. Our guys are OK, one has a mild concussion (Captain’s seat), but otherwise he’s doing well and at home. I had my best driver behind the wheel whom I trust 100%, yet the accident still occurred; so I encourage you all to do what’s right and try to minimize risk at all levels. Accidents WILL happen no matter what you do to prevent them. Also, the new NFPA 1901 standard specifies also that equipment needs to be secured in the cab of fire apparatus.Even though you may have the seatbelt on, and even have airbags for roll-over protection, “flying” equipment WILL injure you in the cab. Be safe and thanks to all who assisted us on scene.Primary Agency: Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department

NFPA Releases Report on Home Structure Fires

Between 2003 and 2006, an estimated 378,600 home structure fires were reported, causing an annual average of 2,850 civilian deaths, 13,090 civilian fire injuries and $6.1 billion in direct property damage according to the National Fire Protection Association’s Home Structure Fires report, covering one- and two-family dwellings and apartments. Home fires accounted for 73% of all reported structure fires, 91% of civilian structure fire deaths, 86% of the civilian structure fire injuries and 69% of the direct property loss.
Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, while smoking materials are the leading causes of home fire deaths. Approximately 24% of all home fire deaths were caused by fires that started in the bedroom; 23% resulted from fires originating in the living room, family room, or den. Although smoke alarms operated in 52% of the reported home fires, no working smoke alarm was present in 63% of the home fire deaths.
The report further breaks down causes and circumstances of home fires reported during the four year period:
Roughly 33% of home fires and home fire deaths occurred in December, January and February.
About 41% of home fires began in the kitchen or cooking area.
Heating equipment fires caused the largest percentage of direct property damage.
96% of all homes have at least one smoke alarm.
53% of the people killed by home fires were in the room or area of origin when the fire started.

Man charged with biting off tip of paramedic's finger. Chicago medic was first on the scene of "person down" that turned out to be a domestic battle. This happened Sunday morning at 12:57 AM when the call was dispatched for a person down in the 2600 block of West Cermak Road.
Upon arrival, the paramedic immediately saw a woman being beaten by her boyfriend, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said. Since the paramedic was the first to respond to the scene, he attempted to intervene and the man bit off about one-fourth of the tip of his right thumb, he said.
