UL is urging consumers to take extra caution if they are going to use turkey fryers this holiday season.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — It's a complicated story, but a Thurston County, Wash., man says he managed to shoot himself in the head with a .22-caliber rifle while fishing for salmon.A sheriff's report says the man told deputies he fired a shot into the Deschutes River on Sunday afternoon but the bullet ricocheted off a rock and hit him in the temple. When he scratched the spot with his finger, he says the bullet fell out of his head and into the river.
The tale came to light although the man went home and refused to tell his girlfriend how he had been injured. After he left again, she called 911. When deputies pulled over the man's pickup truck, he told them what happened.
The Olympian reports that the man was treated at an area hospital and released. The newspaper says the man was not cited for any violations.

Police officers in Indiana are upset over a new law allowing residents to use deadly force against public servants, including law enforcement officers, who unlawfully enter their homes. It was signed by Republican Governor Mitch Daniels in March.
The first of its kind in the United States, the law was adopted after the state Supreme Court went too far in one of its rulings last year, according to supporters. The case in question involved a man who assaulted an officer during a domestic violence call. The court ruled that there was “no right to reasonably resist unlawful entry by police officers.”

By Travis Andersen, Globe StaffTwelve people were evacuated from a South End apartment building and four Boston police officers and an ambulance crew were taken to a hospital after a woman committed suicide Monday night inside an apartment by ingesting a toxic chemical, fire officials said.Boston Deputy Fire Chief Steve Dunbar said at the hazmat scene that the woman ingested the chemical on the first floor of 676 Mass. Ave. at about 9 p.m. and was later pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.He said four police officers and the ambulance team of two EMS workers were being quarantined at BMC to determine whether they were affected by the substance.Dunbar said a relative of the woman, whose name and age he did not know, reported that the victim told her she ingested a chemical and asked that her cats be taken care of.The deputy fire chief said the victim appeared to be young, but he could not be more specific.He said the woman is believed to have ingested sodium azide, a chemical used to make airbags. “But it can metabolize into some kind of cyanide,†Dunbar said, adding that the woman died about an hour or two after ingesting the substance.He said at about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday that crews were preparing to reenter the apartment building to see if it presented a safety risk, a process expected to take a few hours.Dunbar also said the officers and EMS workers who were quarantined did not appear to be showing signs of being adversely affected by the chemical.Travis Andersen can be reached at tandersen@globe.com.

Grass and wildfire season came early in the Brainerd lakes area as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fought five grass fires in the area since Saturday — including a 75-acre wild fire located about six miles east of Hackensack.

DNR program forester Mark Mortensen said Monday that fire danger in Brainerd is high and he advises people to use extreme caution with any burning in wooded or grassland areas. Mortensen said the lakes area is dry and the soil does not have moisture in it, making it easy for grass and wildfires to spread.

USFA Releases Civilian Fire Fatalities in Residential Buildings (2008-2010) Report

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) issued a special report today examining the characteristics of civilian fire fatalities in residential buildings. The report, Civilian Fire Fatalities in Residential Buildings (2008-2010), was developed by USFA's National Fire Data Center and is based on 2008 to 2010 data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).

According to the report:

• Ninety-two percent of all civilian fatalities in residential building fires involve thermal burns and smoke inhalation.
• The leading specific location where civilian fire fatalities occur in residential buildings is the bedroom (55 percent).
• Fifty percent of civilian fire fatalities in residential buildings occur between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. This period also accounts for 47 percent of fatal fires.
• Thirty-six percent of fire victims in residential buildings were trying to escape at the time of their deaths; an additional 35 percent were sleeping.
• "Other unintentionally set, careless" actions and "smoking" (each accounting for 16 percent) are the leading causes of fatal residential building fires.
• Approximately 44 percent of civilian fatalities in residential building fires are between the ages of 40 and 69. Thirteen percent of the fire fatalities in residential buildings were less than 10 years old.

NBC has approved a such a pilot, Chicago Fire, produced by Dick Wolf and reported to be an action drama showing the lives of the men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. Writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (both of 3:10 to Yuma fame, starring Russell Crowe) are also working on the project.
