About Time–This has been a known hazard for some time while

MODERN DAY BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CATCHES THE EYES OF NEWS INVESTIGATORS

Fire departments are worried as rescues become more dangerous in newer homes. Experts estimate the time it takes to save a house built after the mid-1990s is shorter than in older homes due to the materials used to build modern homes.Last summer, Todd Miller was fighting a fire inside a Blaine house. While crawling on his hands and knees inside the main floor, the unthinkable happened."I opened up the hose nozzle to put the fire out and all of a sudden I could feel the floor start to give way," Miller recalled.In an instant, the floor disintegrated and he was falling through flames as he tumbled into the basement. Against all odds, he managed to find his way through the thick smoke to a door where his colleagues came to the rescue."That light-weight construction, you just never know what it's going to do," said Miller.That house, like thousands of others built over the past 15 years, was constructed using engineered materials. They are light weight, super strong and a big cost savings -- but it seems no one anticipated how dramatically they would change the dynamics of house fires.Firefighters agree that escape or rescue is now a much trickier proposition in newer homes, and the likelihood of massive damage to property is far greater.Communities like Blaine, which have lots of newer homes, have seen the downside of lightweight construction.According to Fire Inspector Jeremiah Anderson, with from the Spring Lake Park, Blaine and Mounds View Fire Department, floors and roofs can collapse rather quickly with the newer building materials.Roofs are built of truss systems with gusset plates holding everything together, but the plates don't penetrate the wood deeply, making them more apt to pop off when they get hot. Also, floor joists are made up of compressed wood, which is much thinner than standard 2x10's. FOX 9 Fire Test. How concerned should you be if your home is made of these new materials? To find out, the FOX 9 Investigators set up a test burn with the help of the St. Paul Fire Department.The experiment involved two different floor assemblies. One used 2x10s and plywood materials that were commonly used in homes built before the 1990's. The other is made up of engineered I-joists capped with chip board, the lightweight construction materials. View Images of the FOX 9 Fire Materials Test The FOX 9 team and St. Paul firefighters stacked concrete blocks about 6 feet high to support the four corners of the floor assembly. Then, a couch was placed underneath to mimic a miniaturized, unfinished basement to serve as fuel for the fire. A mannequin and two hundred pounds of sand were also placed on top of the floor to simulate the weight of a person.In the first test, which intended to see how the modern "lightweight" construction materials held up in a fire, it only took about a minute before the flames from the couch reached the support beams of the floor. After another 45 seconds, the floor was burning as if it had been doused in gasoline. The flames chewed through the beams in about 2 minutes, and then one of the beams broke apart.After about four minutes, the floor could no longer support the weight of the test dummy. It fell through the floor so quickly even St. Paul Fire Chief Tim Butler was surprised."This was like burning a piece of gasoline," he said. "Almost every home built in the last ten or fifteen years is constructed just like this."The second test burn also used a similar couch as fuel, but the floor in the second experiment was made of solid wood 2.10s, not engineered I-joists. These were common construction materials in houses built before the mid 90s -- and there's a huge difference between the two tests.In the second controlled burn, it took about 9 minutes until our dummy on top of the floor fell through -- more than doubling the time the lightweight materials could withstand. What Can You Do?So what should you do if your house is built with lightweight materials and not legacy lumber?Fire Chief Nyle Zickmund retrofitted his house in Blaine with sprinklers. A few years ago, his fireplace overheated and ignited some materials inside a wall. The fire then spread to the engineered truss system that supports the floor. However, thanks to the sprinklers, the damage to the chief's home wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been."With this system, we could have a sprinkler-controlled fire here and I'd still be in the house tonight," said Zickmund. The cost of installing a sprinkler system in new home construction can average about $1 to $1.50 per square foot, but the estimates rise to between $3 and $3.50 for existing homes. Fire officials say there is a misconception about sprinklers all going off at once in a home and flooding the entire house, but that is not true. Sprinkler systems are designed to activate by individual sprinkler heads, meaning only those near the heat source would activate, specifically dousing the area of the fire.Homeowners with unfinished basements can also put sheetrock on the exposed floor joists in order to reducing the time flames could get into those areas in the event of a fire. Smoke Detectors Perhaps now more than ever, it's important to make sure your home has working smoke detectors. As the FOX 9 Investigator's experiment so graphically demonstrates, houses made of light weight construction materials can burn much faster than those built of legacy lumber, and a smoke alarm gives you a much better chance to get out quickly. NIST Release report on SOFA SUPER STORE FIRE

Abstract:
A fire occurred on the evening of June 18, 2007, in the Sofa Super Store in Charleston, SC. NIST analyzed the fire ground, consulted with other experts, and performed computer simulations of fire growth alternatives. Based on these analyses, the following sequence of events is likely to have occurred. A fire began in packing material and discarded furniture outside an enclosed loading dock area. The fire spread to the loading dock, then into both the retail showroom and warehouse spaces. During the early stages of the fire in the two latter locations, the fire spread was slowed by the limited supply of fresh air. This under-ventilation led to generation of a large mass of pyrolyzed and only partially oxidized effluent. The smoke and combustible gases flowed into the interstitial space below the roof and above the suspended ceiling of the main retail showroom. As this space filled with unburned fuel, the hot smoke also seeped through the suspended ceiling into the main showroom and formed a hot smoke layer below the suspended ceiling. Up to this time, the extent of fire spread into the interstitial space was not visible to fire fighters in the store. If the fire spread had been visible to the fire fighters in the store, it would have provided a direct indication of a fire hazard in the showroom. Meanwhile, the fire at the back of the main showroom and the gas mixture below the suspended ceiling were both still fuel rich. When the front windows were broken out or vented, the inflow of additional air allowed the heat release rate of the fire to intensify rapidly and added air to the layer of unburned fuel below the suspended ceiling enabling the ignition of the unburned fuel/air mixture. The fire swept from the rear to the front of the main showroom extremely quickly, and then into the west and east showrooms. Nine fire fighters were killed in the Sofa Super Store fire. Check the heads

Recent trend of glass bulb sprinklers not having the proper amount of fluid in the bulbs.

These sprinklers have been discovered installed in systems that are “in service” during our on-site inspections. Also, some contractors’ field personnel have come across them prior to installation.
As you are well aware, the amount of fluid in the glass bulb plays a critical role in the proper activation of the sprinkler head. The fluid in the glass bulb expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and water to flow.
The small air bubble within the glass bulb determines the activating temperature of the sprinkler. As heat expands the liquid, the air bubble is compressed and absorbed. When the bubble disappears the pressure rises rapidly until the bulb shatters. The larger the air bubble the longer it takes before the sprinkler activates.
Please have your personnel carefully inspect all sprinkler heads prior to installation.
Also, please report any occurrence with these sprinklers to our office. If possible, please send the sprinklers to our office.

Bemidji Apartment Fire

Evidently there are some building codes in place here. Looks as if the fire was conpartmentized by fire stops extending to the roof line on this apartment buildings in Bemidji MN. Think of what would have happened if the attic space was open the full length of the building, worse if this had happened at night.

The horrible fire at regency apartments in Bemidji, MN. Pray for the people who live there that they will find shelter and deal with the devastations that come with this situation.
"The fire is believed to be one of the worst in Bemidji since a fire destroyed Central Elementary School in 1958. Anderson said the apartment fire appeared to have started on the balcony of a central third-floor apartment, but that was speculation until the investigation was complete. No civilian injuries were reported, but a Bemidji firefighter was treated and released at North Country Regional Hospital." (Quote from Bemidji Pioneer)

"One Meridian Plaza"

Nine years ago today, smoke was reported in the early evening at the 38-story "One Meridian Plaza" office tower in Center City Philadelphia.
That fire would take the lives of Philadelphia Firefighters, Captain David P. Holcombe, age 52, Firefighter Phyllis McAllister, age 43 and Firefighter James A. Chappell, age 29.
This fire burned for 19 hours and ran from the 22nd floor to the 30th floor before a sprinkler system installed by a tenant on the 30th floor knocked it down. It eventually went to 12-alarms using 51 engine companies, 15 ladder companies, 11 specialized units, and over 300 Firefighters.

Fake skylight uses solar panels to light LEDs

Just another example of being careful on the scene. With photovoltatic systems in homes, watch for power where you least expect it.

Wish you had a skylight, but don't have the ability to cut a hole in your roof? MAKE subscriber Chris did to, and wrote in to share his solution to the problem: a pv+led-based 'fake' skylight. The concept is pretty simple, but with a nice result. He had some unused capacity on his PV (photovoltatic) solar panel, and basically hooked up a bunch of high power LEDs directly to it. To achieve the 'skylight' look, he built a custom metal box with a glass diffuser screen, and mounted the diodes inside of it. He has a nice write-up on his site, along with a calculator to determine how the LEDs should be connected. Excellent work!

Residential Fire Sprinklers Win Again at ICC Meeting in Baltimore

In today’s meeting of the International Code Council (ICC) in Baltimore, Maryland, proposals made to eliminate the requirement for residential fire sprinklers in the International Residential Code (IRC) were defeated. These requirements were included in the 2009 IRC, to become effective January 1, 2011. Proposals to modify the 2012 International Residential Code included RB 54, which would have removed the mandatory requirement and made it an optional provision, RB 56, which would delete sprinkler requirements for townhomes and one- and two-family occupancies and move P2904 back to the appendix, making the requirement optional; and RB 57, which would have completely removed the sprinkler requirements from these residential occupancies. News releases: New study shows ease of integrating home fire sprinklers with local water supply systems


No design issues or significant cost issues found

October 22, 2009 – Home fire sprinklers can be integrated with local water supply systems with ease according to a new study –  Integration of Residential Sprinklers with Water Supply Systems (PDF, 842 KB)  - released today by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The study, conducted by Newport Partners of Maryland, looked at detailed information for 20 US communities with a residential sprinkler ordinance and concluded that water supply integration requirements have been put into place, and there are no examples of insurmountable problems or issues. Neither design problems nor significant added costs were found in the communities surveyed. Is this yet another instance of engineered wood construction, and failure to recognize it? The following story link shows that the occupants were at home when the fire was discovered and yet the fire progressed enough to have the floors fail. Seems like a very short time for this to happen. Remember what they taught you about the change in the fuel loads in modern housing? Again, Is it time we rethink how we fight fires? We Revisit the Wood Truss Issue – Something New?

I keep coming back from time to to time to this issue. Seems that there is a product out there that will slow the deterioration of engineered wood products in a fire. This story at Firehouse.com/paint gives the low down. I added a few links to products pages that are interesting. Seems that his would be a good place to start for increased building code issues to protect this type of  building product.

There's new information about a possible fix for a potentially deadly hazard in your home.

A recent 12 News investigation showed how lightweight wood floor beams can quickly collapse -- without warning -- in a house fire. Story by wisn.com

Lightweight, lightweight? This from Fire Gezzer

Hope you have heard of and are aware of lightweight construction, here they are going even lighter. The fire service needs to push the issue of lightweight construction material safety. When used this material should be protected by covering with drywall and or the manufacturing process needs to be examined to include making this stuff fire resistive. (Without making more toxic products of combustion) On their web site these manufactures have done fire exposure test. Stay Safe

They’re Not Burning Fast Enough !

THERE HAVE BEEN TOO MANY FIREFIGHTER DEATHS AND INJURIES in the past few years due to the rapid interior collapse of newer homes built with “lightweight construction” methods.  This problem may be lessened soon with the introduction of Georgia-Pacific’s new wood-chips-and-glue XJ 85 I-Joist.

This remarkable product has several large holes already cut through the woody-type floor joists that are designed to make for faster and easier installation of heating ducts, electric conduits, etc.

With this innovation being brought into the housing construction trade, newer houses that have fires will now be falling in before the first-due engine even gets there.

It’s what the Yuppies call a Win-Win.  The FD wins because we’re not there yet when the roof meets the basement and the home builders win because rebuilding costs are increased.  As for the poor sap whose house burns down ….. well, that’s what insurance is for, isn’t it?

Presumably, the cost savings from using this method would be enough to pay for installing a home sprinkler system.  But don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.  Especially in Minnesota.
