Odd firefighting

Peat fires are unique and challenging in Minnesota winters

Peat fires can be a common occurrence during a dry Minnesota summer. They are normally rare in the middle of the winter, but this season may be an exception.

The winter peat fire Dec. 26 near the town of Gully in Polk County, which was ignited by a surface fire in grass and brush, is an example of the increased challenges faced by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local fire fighters. They battled cold, wintery conditions to control the fire before ultimately putting it out.

“It’s unusual for us to be battling a peat fire at this time of year,” said Brian Pisarek, DNR Northeast Region program forester and peat fire expert. “The lack of precipitation this fall made conditions just right for something like this to happen.”

There have been several other wildfires that resulted in peat ignition in northwestern Minnesota from fall through early January. That’s a testament to the unusual weather conditions in Minnesota recently.

Flooding the burning peat, or using peat nozzles attached to a hose, are the most efficient and effective ways to extinguish a fire, and the least disruptive to the area soils and vegetation. Flooding consists of building a dike around the fire and using large irrigation pipes to completely cover the ground in water. Peat nozzles, designed much like a metal garden wand, are inserted under the peat to shoot high-pressure streams of water into areas where the peat is burning underground.

Battling winter peat fires by flooding or with peat nozzles can be difficult. That’s because accessing nearby water and keeping water pumping equipment from freezing before and during delivery of the water to the fire can be challenging. Water doesn’t flow well when air temperatures are in the teens or single digits.

“Normally, we can find a nearby water source in a ditch or neighboring pond or lake,” explained Dana Carlson, Warroad area forest supervisor. “But in the winter, and with the drought conditions, it can be difficult to access available local water sources. That can cost us fire-fighting time, and require a greater amount of manpower and resources to haul water from greater distances.”

Other common tools used to extinguish peat fires are excavators and dozers. Heavy equipment is used to mix burning peat with deeper layers of soil that still contain moisture. The equipment breaks up the burning particles, mixing, cooling and sealing the peat off from oxygen so it is no longer able to burn. Tillage equipment can also mix surface snow or applied water to help extinguish burning peat.

Areas of peat are found throughout Minnesota. Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed plant material, often found in wetlands or areas that had been wetlands at one time. It can accumulate to a depth of from 20-30 inches to several feet in deep bogs. Peat soil generally absorbs moisture, but unusually dry conditions, such as those Minnesota is experiencing this winter, can desiccate the upper peat layers and increase the potential for peat soils to burn. Ironically, when peat is extremely dry it becomes hydrophobic, meaning it actually repels water.

Peat fires are dangerous to extinguish because the fire smolders beneath the ground as a glowing combustion rather than as an open flame. Windy conditions can cause peat embers to pop up to the surface and ignite surrounding frozen, dry vegetation. Firefighters are at risk of severe burns on their feet and legs if they fall into subsurface pockets of burning peat. The heavy, dense peat fire smoke can lead to respiratory problems in people and livestock. It also has caused vehicle crashes in low-visibility driving conditions.

The Dec. 26 peat fire has been extinguished, but the area is being monitored by DNR foresters. Unchecked, peat fires have the potential to last for years during cyclic dry periods.

With little fall precipitation, warm winter temperatures and scarce snow cover, an unusual winter fire season is upon us, and spring may come in “like a lion” in a few months.

According to the Minnesota climatology office, “without ample, widespread precipitation in the late winter and early spring, the state will face deficient soil moisture supplies and low water levels in wetlands, lakes and rivers.” Additionally, areas with a hard deep frost and lack of snow cover will experience increased runoff in the spring, resulting in less groundwater recovery. It is anticipated this will contribute to control problems if fire ignitions do occur.

“It would be extremely helpful to get much needed winter moisture followed by a nice slow melt,” Pisarek said. “We firefighters would all sleep better at nights – at least through the next few winter months.”

See anything wrong here–leave a comment

While returning from a trailer fire I heard GFD tone out for a reported car fire in the area of 20th and Chase, a thick black header was visible from a mile away. Crews from Engine 4 put a quick knock on the fire and nobody was hurt. While they were working, a rubbernecker slammed head-on with another vehicle just down the street. GPD was on scene asap, it appeared there were no injuries at the crash.

USFA firefighter fatality–Annual Report

USFA Releases Annual Report on Firefighter Fatalities in the United States (PDF, 2.5 Mb)

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) Reports Eighty-seven on duty firefighters from 31 states lost their lives as the result of 83 fatal incidents that occurred in 2010. This is the second consecutive year of substantially fewer firefighter deaths in the United States.

Emmitsburg, MD. – The United States Fire Administration (USFA) today released the report Firefighter Fatalities in the United States in 2010 (PDF, 2.5 Mb). The report continues a series of annual studies by the USFA of on duty firefighter fatalities. The USFA is the single public agency source of information for all on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States each year.

Illinois experienced the highest number of fatalities with nine firefighters killed; New York and Ohio had the next highest totals with eight firefighter deaths each.

Landmark Residential Fire Study Shows How Crew Sizes and Arrival

Times Influence Saving Lives and Property

A landmark study issued today by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and research collaborators including CFAI-Risk, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), shows that the size of firefighting crews has a substantial effect on the fire service’s ability to protect lives and property in residential fires.

The study included more than 60 controlled fire experiments to determine the impact of crew size, first-due engine arrival time and subsequent apparatus arrival times on firefighter safety and effectiveness at a low-hazard residential structure fire.

The results of the field experiments apply only to fires in low-hazard residential structures as described in the NFPA Standard 1710, but it provides a strong starting point,” said Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, Assistant to the General President, IAFF.

Primary findings of the experiments indicated that the following factors had the most significant impact on the success of fire fighting operations:

Overall Scene Time: The four-person firefighting crews were able to complete 22 essential firefighting and rescue tasks in a typical residential structure 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 25 percent faster than three-person crews.

Time to Water on Fire: The four-person crews were able to deliver water to a similar-sized fire 15 percent faster than the two-person crews and 6 percent faster than three-person crews, steps that help to reduce property damage and lower danger to the firefighters.

Ground Ladders and Ventilation: The four-person crews completed laddering and ventilation (for life safety and rescue) 30% faster than the two-person crews and 25% faster than the three-person crews.

Primary Search: The four-person crews completed a primary search and rescue 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 5 percent faster than three-person crews.

Occupant Rescue: Three different “standard” fires were simulated using NIST’s Fire Dynamic Simulator to examine how the interior conditions change for trapped occupants and the firefighters if the fire develops more slowly or more rapidly than observed in the actual experiments. The fire modeling simulations demonstrated that two-person, late-arriving crews can face a fire that is twice the intensity of the fire faced by fire-person, early arriving crews. Additionally, the modeling demonstrated that trapped occupants receive less exposure to toxic combustion products, such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, if the firefighters arrive earlier and involve three or more persons per crew.

“The results of this study will be especially useful to the many fire departments across the nation that are challenged by budget crises, rising call volume, personnel and equipment shortages, security issues and an overall expectation to do more with less” said CFAI-Risk and CPSE, Inc., President Chief Randy R. This study was funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The next step for the research team is to develop a training package for firefighters and public officials that would enable them to have both quantitative and qualitative understanding of the research. This project is also being funding by FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

mabas21 — March 28, 2010 — LSFD was dispatched to a reported fully involved house fire at about9:15, on arrival heavy smoke and fire blowing from one window was found. It only took a little oxygen for the fire to blow out of every window. Incredible water placement knocked the fire right away and nobody was injured. Thank God the residents were not at home when the fire broke out and investigators were on scene working. Awesome job by LSFD!

Rescue from apartment building fire in Milford, Massachusetts

Some pretty good shots, fire went from offensive to defensive with evacuation signal given. Always love it when a pet is also saved as well as the occupants! Not sure but looks as it this may have been a balloon frame construction type,  fire on first floor quickly spreads to the upper areas?

From You Tube site  metrowestvideos A fire destroyed a three-story home at 31 Pine St. in Milford the afternoon of 3/25/10. A tenant, Gary Howe, had to be rescued from the third floor by a ladder truck. Two cats were also safely rescued

And another one here, remember there are more and more video capture devices out there. You are always on camera.

From sparkywfd  Around 1pm, March 25, 2010 firefighters were called to this Pine St. apartment complex for a fire. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing and an occupant was hanging out the window on the 3rd floor.
Heavy fire was on the 1st floor rapidly extending to the upper floors. Firefighters made the rescue and attempted an aggressive interior attack but the fire was way ahead of them. Firefighters eventually had to be pulled out and fight the blaze from the exterior.
It took almost 2 hours to bring this 3 alarm fire under control.

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Remembered

99 years ago TODAY (March 25 1911) a NYC factory fire resulted in the deaths of 146 workers at Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Presently the building is still occupied by New York University and each year the deceased are remembered in a ceremony at the site. Cornell University has done an outstanding job in documenting the fire.

One canister became a projectile and was found across the parking lot directly behind the car (against the building shown in the video -- about a 50-foot trajectory of approximately 7-pound sharp metal object).

This is a video from a recent taxpayer fire at Bronx Box 55-3563. There was a partial roof collapse, followed by a collapse of the front parapet and exterior wall. Operations at this fire were changed from an offense to defensive attack because of heavy fire and concerns about the structural integrity of the building. Prior to the collapse all units were withdrawn and collapse zones were established. Suddenly without warning the front parapet and exterior wall collapsed. There were no injuries as a result of this collapse because collapse zones were established early on and all members remained out of the collapse zone.

At 10:23 a.m. SVFD got a structure fire. It was a duplex home and was fully involved. Fire originally started out in the garage. Ladd FD, Peru FD, and Depue FD also responded. This is mostly the equipment that responded. Firefighters put out the fire very quickly. Illinois State Fire Marshall was called to the scene to investigate the fire.

Nice On Arrival video clip - Gary Indiana and from MABAS21 GFD crews were dispatched to a reported house fire at 2028 Ohio on 03-08-10, on arrival Engine 12 advised of a working fire in a 25x50 frame house. One line was stretched and an aggressive attack was made. The fire was brought under control within minutes and nobody was injured.

"One Meridian Plaza"

Nine years ago today, smoke was reported in the early evening at the 38-story "One Meridian Plaza" office tower in Center City Philadelphia.
That fire would take the lives of Philadelphia Firefighters, Captain David P. Holcombe, age 52, Firefighter Phyllis McAllister, age 43 and Firefighter James A. Chappell, age 29.
This fire burned for 19 hours and ran from the 22nd floor to the 30th floor before a sprinkler system installed by a tenant on the 30th floor knocked it down. It eventually went to 12-alarms using 51 engine companies, 15 ladder companies, 11 specialized units, and over 300 Firefighters.

A look back – Station Night Club Fire

The Station nightclub fire occurred beginning at 11:07 PM on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at The Station, a nightclub located in West Warwick, RI , it is considered to be the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in American history, killing 100 people, four of whom died after being admitted to local hospitals. The fire was caused when pyrotechnic sparks, set off by the tour manager of the evening's headlining band, ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings around the stage, creating a flash fire that engulfed the club in 5½ minutes. Some 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured. Video footage of the fire depicts the astonishing rapidity of its initial growth, the quickness with which stampeding patrons blocked the front entrance, and the ensuing pandemonium as several people tried desperately to help, by whatever means possible, those attempting to escape the building, which, by that time, was already gushing black smoke.
