You most likely have gotten emails that list some things that will tell you how old you are. I made up a list of things that are no longer used or are not the way things are done anymore, how many can you remember. Want to add some, leave a COMMENT!
Do you remember?
- Riding the tailboard, running to catch the tailboard
- Combination nozzles and smooth bores being the old nozzles
- Three quarter boots, long Rubber coats
- Bakelite helmets, steel SCBA bottles
- Fire whistles
- Red ball gloves
- Coat snaps
- Open cabs
- Dispatched with the location given just the owners name and you knew where it was
- Sticking the nozzle in the window to hit the fire
- Hanging hose in the tower
- 6 volt electrical system on the engine
- Front mounted pumps (some are still made)
- Adding antifreeze to those pumps in the winter
- The original red books from IFSTA
- Rope hose tools
- Wooden pike pole and axe handles
- Box of cigars kept in the engine for those all night fires
- Jet axe
- Canvas port-a-tanks
- Gasoline powered apparatus
- Manual transmission, with synchromesh transmissions, two speed differentials
- Red and Green lights on the station
- Waiting for the air to build up so the brakes would release
- Metal hand lanterns
If you remembered 0-5 = you’re still young
If you remembered 6-10 = you are getting older
If you remembered 11-15 = don’t tell your age,
If you remembered 16-25 = you’re older than dirt!
I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts of being on a fire department.
Don't forget to pass this along!! Especially to all you’re really OLD friends...
